My name is Bob Mitchell. I have been a volunteer DJ since 2006. My weekly two hour program is broadcast on WKWC-FM, WMAK (AM/FM/Internet), Crescent Hill Radio (AM/Internet) and now I’m glad to be a part of The Bluegrass Jamboree.
“Best of Bluegrass” (“BOB”) began as a weekly two hour program on Radio Bluegrass International in March 2008 and ended in May 2013 when the Bluegrass Museum began a major fund raising campaign in preparation for its move into a new location.
“BOB” is recorded in the studios of WFPK-FM, Louisville, Ky. Since 2006, I have also been the occasional on-air host for “Sunday Bluegrass” when the usual host is out of town, etc.
Wayne Bledsoe and Eddie Stubbs were my early DJ mentors. I also wrote reviews for “Bluegrass Now,” “Louisville Music News,” and “Bluegrass Music Profiles.”
Over 40 artists have been my studio guests, including, Dailey and Vincent – Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out – Lonesome River Band – Valerie Smith & Becky Buller – David Davis & The Warrior River Boys – Donna Ulisse – Tony Holt & The Wildwood Valley Boys – Kati Penn & New Town – James Alan Shelton – Carrie Hassler, just to name a few….
2010 – featured as the “DJ of the Month” in Bluegrass Music Profiles.
2013 – awarded Honorary Lifetime Membership of The International Bluegrass Music Museum as a token of appreciation for five years as a volunteer “DJ.”
Music has always been a part of my life and I’ve played guitar since the early 1950s. In 1995 I recorded an album of mostly original humorous songs (“Some Days This Place Is A Zoo”). Ron Stewart played fiddle and banjo on the project and has since been named The International Bluegrass Music Association Fiddle Player of the Year and Banjo Player of the Year.
I was born in Louisville, Kentucky and have been a bluegrass fan since the early 1950s. I was fortunate to hear and meet many first generation bluegrass and traditional country musicians. Today, I consider it an honor and privilege to be able to share the music all of us love. My goal is to present a professional radio program that reflects the best music our industry has to offer.
“BOB” (Best of Bluegrass) is the show that provides your minimum daily required dose of Vitamin B (bluegrass). So, please join me every Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. Until we meet in person or on the radio, keep a song in your heart.
