History of the UCHS Bluegrass Band:

It all started one day, about six years ago, during lunch in Ms. Wright’s drama classroom. Troy Boone – now with the bluegrass band Sideline– was picking in the room when a young man walked in and quietly asked if he could pick with his friend. That young man was Craig T Shelton- now as senior studying Bluegrass at ETSU. Troy and Craig T started picking together and soon some of the drama girls with amazing vocals joined in and before we knew it we had accidentally started a bluegrass band. With all that talent right on hand, we decided to do a show. We worked with the theatre arts students and created a show for a Relay for Life fundraiser and that was our first gig.

Each year, we form a new band because we lose senior members at graduation in May. So far we have been very blessed to keep the band going and always find new students interested in bluegrass music. The new incarnation of the band works hard to offer a quality set of bluegrass songs to our regional audiences by September each school year.

Influences:

Our band members love traditional bluegrass and gospel songs. Adam credits Tony Rice as one of his biggest influences and as well as Bryan Sutton, Adam Steffey, Rob Ickes and Jerry Douglas. Ben loves to listen to Earl Scruggs, JD Crowe, Allen Shelton, and Sonny Osborne.

Recordings:

In December 2017, we released our first CD, Keep Travelin’ On and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our alum band members, of the school and community, and Ben Bateson at ETSU’s Recording Lab. We appreciate all the folks that helped make this project a reality.

Highlights:

We have enjoyed several special moments over the past year, but performing on the Danny Stewart’s Bluegrass Cruise and performing at Bluegrass First Class in Ashville,NC had to be our top favorite events.

This year we graduate five seniors (Ben, Adam, Bailey, Matthew, and Kaitlyn) and they all plan to go on to college. Ben and Adam want to study at ETSU and be a part often bluegrass program there. Bailey also plans to attend ETSU and wants to become a drama teacher. Matthew wants to study agriculture in college and hopes to use that knowledge on his farm one day. Kaitlyn, our PR person and graphic designer, plans to study graphic design and digital media at ETSU.
