POTD: Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road
Written by Annette Grady on May 2, 2024
Carolina Road has significantly impacted the bluegrass music scene.
Lorraine Jordan, also known as the “Lady of Tradition” in the bluegrass community, is a talented artist with a unique mix of driving mandolin, lightning-speed banjo, country pedal steel, and soulful vocals that seem to go on forever. She has fronted Carolina Road for over a decade and has seven national recordings to her credit. In 2015, she collaborated with 11 Grand Ole Opry stars on a recording project titled “Country Grass.” The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America awarded Lorraine the Bluegrass Traditional Vocalist of the Year. It recognized her song “That’s Kentucky” as the Song of the Year.
Carolina Road is Lorraine Jordan’s handpicked band, consisting of talented musicians, including Ben Greene, Warren Blair, Wayne Morris, Kevin Lamm, and Allen Dyer. They have played with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Charlie Moore, The Bluegrass Cardinals, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, James King, Lost & Found, David Parmley & Continental Divide, and Don Rigsby. The band has earned a reputation as one of the hardest-working bands in bluegrass, annually averaging 60 bluegrass festivals in the U.S. and Canada. They have headlined the Bluegrass Cruise and hosted the Canadian Bluegrass Awards. Carolina Road’s performance is characterized by the band’s hard-driving traditional sound, invigorating instrumentals, and smooth blending vocals.
Lorraine Jordan and Carolina Road have received six nominations for the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America awards. Lorraine has been nominated for Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year (Traditional), and Bluegrass Promoter of the Year (for her company, Jordan Entertainment). Carolina Road is up for Instrumental Group of the Year and Gospel Group of the Year (Traditional). Carolina Road’s distinct sound and old-time flair are attributed to the bluegrass-rich area of North Carolina from which they hail.
