About

The Boston Bluegrass Union is an all-volunteer, New England-based bluegrass music association promoting and supporting bluegrass festivals, concerts, jams, and bluegrass music education throughout the Northeast.

Background

The Boston Bluegrass Union (BBU) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation that is run by an all-volunteer Board of Directors, with a mission to educate people in the northeast about bluegrass music. BBU was formed in 1976, and hosted its first concert on October 3, 1976 with Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys. The BBU is the premier source for bluegrass music activities in the Northeast, presenting concerts, festivals, education programs.

Our major production is the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, held every February in Framingham, MA. The festival started in 1985 as a benefit for Joe Val to help with his medical expenses. It features a star-studded main stage, a showcase stage that shows off the talents of over 20 up-and-coming acts, a kids academy, 24-7 jamming, vendors, and a very unique workshop program. In 2016, this event was named the Bluegrass Event of the Year by the IBMA.

Other events and happenings are available on the website.  Check periodically for updates and changes.

Goals for the Boston Bluegrass Union:

To support traditional bluegrass music across New England through concerts, festivals, jams, and educational activities.
