Origins
In 1994, Tim Stafford, a former member of Alison Krauss & Union Station, decided to form a “weekend band.” He collaborated with Wayne Taylor, a Southwest Virginia coal truck driver and musician. The band’s early lineup also included Shawn Lane, who had performed with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, and Rob Ickes, who had toured with Lynn Morris. They played informally, and soon, Jason Burleson joined the group.

Blue Highway’s debut performance occurred on December 31, 1994, during the First Night Celebration in Kingsport, TN. Their first album, “It’s a Long, Long Road,” released on Rebel Records, earned them the IBMA Album of the Year award in 1996.
